“What do you want to be when you grow up?” my mother asked.
“I want to be a doctor, astronaut and fashion designer” I responded.
As a child I had lots of answers to that question, because there were so many possibilities and there was nothing I couldn’t do. As years went by and I got older. I found myself losing that mindset. Now at the age twenty-nine I want to bring back the excitement, curiosity and wonder I had from when I was child.
And one of the ways I thought to do that was by learning from others. Everyone has a story to tell no matter how big or small it is and I would like to listen to them.
Falling in love with fashion
“ I want to take art class as my elective”
“ Are you sure?”
“ Very sure”
Art is and always will be a part of my life. I am a firm believe that art can be found wherever you look. And for me fashion was one of my introductions to art. When the options were given to pick an elective I would dedicate two years of my life too. It’s a no-brainer that art class was one of them. I loved drawing as a child, I loved learning about different kinds of mediums that are used. So when it came to an area I wanted to focus on, fashion became my main topic. I loved making drawings of clothes and adding colors and patterns to my designs. It was all so exciting.
Fashion was one of the ways I could express myself. I wanted to create my own clothes but putting that to action would come much much later.
The Journey begins
Just like many people during the 2019 pandemic, I wanted to find a hobby that would keep me occupied and sewing was that for me. My mother had an old Singer sewing machine that I used to learn how to sew. Youtube and blogs became my best friends when it came to learning how to sew. And slowly I was able to make pieces, now they weren’t the best looking clothes but it was my first step. Over the years I improved and learned different techniques but I still have so much more to learn.
What next?
Now I want to learn all I can about fashion. From its history to the impacts fashion has had on society throughout the years. To learn how to style clothing and to hear from other about their journeys to discover their styles.
